danes' families in the area

Hello,

Being recently visiting Tadcaster and the area 'til Stamfordbridge, for historical interests, I was wondering if there's anything about the very people living in the danes' era, I mean, a sort of viking domesday.....it would be useful for my researches if anyone could help me... thanx!

Hello,

I think that as far as Nordic names go the best source IS the Domesday Book. Many are recorded there and can give an insight into the region. Nordic names seem to be mostly found along rivers, which makes sense. But allow for names, even given names, as showing an influence because of whom the family mainly dealt with in trade and everyday life.

No other document comes close to Domesday for this information. I would think, depending on exactly what you are researching, that the York Arc. Trust may well be able to assist.

If we can help further then please just shout.

Stranger,

Having had a further thought about your quest I might recommend a book that looks at the new picture of Norse settlement in the north of England. It is called Blood of the Viking by Julian Richards. Published 2001 by Hodder & Stoughton ISBN 0 340 73385 3.

It goes a long way to bring up to date our knowledge of those people and that era.

Well... there's anybody who doesn't drink it in a 50 miles' width from Tadcaster's brewery?...As long as I can I do it here, even if there is just one pub who has it. Delicious John Smiths...
